Common Emergency Lighting Defects
Common emergency lighting defects include failed batteries, faulty luminaires, missing coverage, no logbook and fittings that light up but fail the duration test.
Regular testing exists because emergency lighting degrades over time. Knowing the common defects helps duty holders spot problems early and keep the system reliable.
The usual defects
- Failed or weak batteries — the most common issue. A fitting may illuminate briefly but fail the annual duration test.
- Faulty luminaires or lamps — fittings that no longer light at all.
- Missing or inadequate coverage — dark spots on escape routes, or areas added during building works without emergency lighting.
- Obstructed or removed fittings — luminaires blocked by new partitions, signage or stock.
- No logbook or records — even a working system fails a compliance check without evidence of testing.
- Charging faults — indicators showing the battery is not recharging after a test.
Why they matter
Each defect undermines the system's ability to perform when it is genuinely needed. Because emergency lighting is a life-safety system, defects should be treated promptly.
Putting them right
Rectify defects through planned remedial works, record the actions in the logbook, and re-test. Consistent monthly and annual testing catches most issues before they become critical.
