EV Charging Distribution Board Requirements

EV chargers need suitably rated, protected circuits from an adequate distribution board — with correct RCD/RCBO protection and capacity for the charging load.

Every EV charger needs a suitably rated, protected circuit from a distribution board with enough capacity. Getting the board arrangements right is fundamental to a safe, compliant installation.

What the board must provide

  • Dedicated circuits for the charge points, correctly sized for the charging load (see cable selection).
  • Appropriate RCD protectionEV charging has specific requirements around the type of RCD and detection of DC fault currents, addressed by the charger and/or upstream protection.
  • Spare ways and capacity for the number of chargers planned, allowing for growth.
  • Correct coordination with the site's maximum demand.

When an upgrade is needed

An older or full board may not have space or the right protection for EV circuits. In that case a board upgrade — or a dedicated EV distribution board — is designed in, informed by the capacity assessment.

Why it matters

The board is where the charger connects to the installation. Correct rating, protection and capacity here keep the charging safe, prevent nuisance tripping, and leave room to expand. It works together with the site's earthing arrangement and load strategy.
