EV Fleet Charging Explained
Fleet EV charging needs enough capacity to charge many vehicles on schedule — combining depot infrastructure, smart load management and back-office control.
Fleet charging provides for an organisation's own vehicles — vans, cars, HGVs or specialist vehicles — usually at a depot. The defining challenge is charging many vehicles reliably to a schedule, often overnight.
What fleet charging needs
- Sufficient capacity — depots often need significant power, confirmed by a capacity assessment and sometimes a supply upgrade.
- Smart load management — dynamic load management ensures every vehicle is charged by the time it is needed without exceeding the supply.
- Back-office control — OCPP systems to schedule, monitor and report on charging.
- Robust infrastructure — hardware and containment suited to heavy, repeated use, with a maintenance plan.
Scheduling is everything
Unlike public charging, fleet charging is about guaranteeing readiness: vehicles must be charged and available when shifts start. Smart scheduling charges vehicles in the right order, uses cheaper off-peak energy, and balances the load across the depot.
Planning a fleet installation
Start with a site survey and capacity assessment, model the fleet's duty cycle, and design capacity, load management and infrastructure around it. Done well, fleet charging is predictable, economical and reliable.
