PAT testing in schools — risk-based inspection and testing of the large stock of portable and high-use equipment, from IT and kitchens to DT workshops and labs.

Schools own a huge and varied stock of electrical equipment — from IT and kitchen appliances to DT workshop tools and science apparatus. PAT testing is the risk-based way to prove that portable and connected equipment is safe for pupils and staff.

Why it matters in schools

Equipment is used intensively, moved frequently and handled by many people, so it wears and gets damaged. A structured programme of electrical testing for this equipment sits alongside the fixed-wire EICR to cover the whole picture.

A risk-based approach

Rather than testing everything on the same cycle, equipment is grouped by risk:

  • Higher-use / higher-risk — kitchen appliances, workshop tools, cleaners' equipment, extension leads — inspected and tested more often.
  • Portable IT and classroom items — checked on a moderate cycle.
  • Fixed, low-risk equipment — inspected less frequently.

The starting point is always a visual inspection, which catches most faults, backed by electrical tests where the equipment type and risk warrant it.

Managing the result

Failed items are removed from service until repaired or replaced, and results are logged against the equipment. Combined with the school's documentation, this demonstrates the equipment duty under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 is being met.

Fitting it in

PAT is convenient to schedule during holiday periods or quiet times, and forms part of the school's coordinated electrical compliance programme alongside inspection and safety-system testing.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement for schools?

There is no law that says 'PAT test annually'. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained safe, and inspection and testing is the practical way to demonstrate that. Frequencies are risk-based: high-use or portable items are checked more often than fixed, low-risk equipment.
